Erin Vassilopoulos is an American director and writer.[2] She is known for her first feature film Superior,[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] starring Alessandra Mesa[1] and Ani Mesa.[10][11][12][13] Matt Jacobs of The Huffington Post described the film as a "playful Almodóvarian psychodrama".[14]
Background
Vassilopoulos was born in 1983 in Riverside, California She studied English and Philosophy as an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.[15] She has an MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Career
In 2015, Vassilopoulos premiered her short film, Superior, at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a premiere at the 2015 Berlinale. The short was bought by Arte, and later extended into her first feature film bearing the same title, which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The short explores the growing pains between teenage identical twin sisters, Marian and Vivian,[16] and the feature is a thriller/drama that picks up their lives six years later, when Marian returns to her hometown to hide out, catapulting both sisters into grave danger.[17] After a festival run in 2021, Superior (feature) was distributed by Factory 25[18] and was reviewed by Amy Nicholson in The New York Times during its theatrical run.[7] In October 2022, Superior had its streaming premiere on The Criterion Channel along with the short film that preceded it.[19][20]
In 2016, Vassilopoulos released her second short film Valeria. It was nominated for the "Best Short Film" award at the Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival. It was included in The Eyeslicer TV Series season (episode "Facial Reconstruction") which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.[21] In 2018, the film was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Champs-Élysées Film Festival.[22]
Vassilopoulos' short film Step into the Mattress received a 2021 production grant from The Future of Film is Female,[23] a nonprofit empowering the works of female filmmakers through exhibition, promotion, and grants.[23]
