Eric Massholder (born 12 December 1960) is a German-born painter and sculptor based on the French Riviera.[1] His work spans painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, and has been exhibited in Monaco, Germany, and Switzerland.[2][3]

Early life and education

Eric Massholder was born on 12 December 1960 in Heidelberg, Germany.[4] He travelled in Morocco in 1979, and in Sicily, Greece, Turkey and India around 1980; sources describe these journeys as formative for his later work.[4][5] He settled on the French Riviera in 1981 and studied at the Villa Arson in Nice in 1981–82.[4][5]

Career

From 1987 to 1989, Massholder lived and worked in Paris with the art dealer Frédéric Nocera, who arranged a studio and lodging in Vaugirard.[5][6][7] He subsequently worked with Anne Lettrée before returning to southern France.[5][7]

Style and themes

Massholder works across painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking.[5] Press coverage has described large, event-like presentations that invite audience participation, notably in the exhibition Mystic Reality in Monaco.[8]

Massholder has engaged with the work and legacy of Vincent van Gogh since at least the late 1990s. In 1999 he illustrated the bibliophile volume Vincent…, comprising original prints and a drawing of Van Gogh,[9][10] and in 2015–2016 presented the exhibition Hommage à Vincent van Gogh in Berlin.[11][12] This thread continued in Monaco with For Vincent: Timeless Connections (2025).[13]

Earlier cycles include Monte Verità, which draws on the Swiss cultural settlement and its utopian associations,[14] and the Berlin project Modefication, presented as a response to fashion imagery and staging.[15]
