Eric Boulanger is an American Grammy Awards-winning Mastering Engineer and professional violinist.[1][2] Eric is owner and chief engineer of The Bakery, an Audio & Vinyl Mastering Studio located in Los Angeles, CA.[3] Boulanger has worked with artists including Weezer, Green Day, Barbra Streisand, the Carpenters, and the soundtrack to film La La Land (soundtrack)|La La Land.[4]

Eric has mastered over 25 Latin Grammy award-winning albums.[5] In 2018, Eric won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album for 50 Años Tocando Para Ti (Orquesta Filarmónica De Bogotá) by Rafa Sardina. He was also mastering engineer on ¡México Por Siempre! Luis Miguel, which won Album of the Year at the 2018 Latin Grammy Awards.

Early Career

Boulanger is a classically-trained violinist who studied at the Juilliard School|Julliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and the Tanglewood Festival|Tanglewood Festival. In 2006, he took an internship with Al Schmitt at Capitol Records Building|Capitol Records in Los Angeles. Schmitt introduced Boulanger to mastering engineer Doug Sax, who hired him the next year.[6]

Boulanger graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.[7] He then when to work for Doug Sax at the Mastering Lab in Ojai, CA.[8][9] While at the Mastering Lab, Boulanger worked as a mastering engineer and maintaining the studio's custom analog equipment.[10]

Eric has been cutting vinyl since 2009, where he learned at the Mastering Lab. At the time, he had no experience with vinyl, and his first task was to build a vinyl cutting lathe.[11]

The Bakery

The Bakery opened in 2015 after the passing of Doug Sax, and the closing of the Mastering Lab.[12] The Bakery is located in Los Angeles on the Sony Pictures Lot.[3] The mastering engineers includes Boulanger and Jett Galindo, who had been Sax's assistant and engineer during the final two years at the Mastering Lab.[13]
