The Netherlands is home to Erasmus Institution Rotterdam, a public research university that can be found in Rotterdam. The late 15th-century humanist and theologian Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus inspired the naming of this educational institution.

While its economics and business school, Erasmus School of Economics and Rotterdam School of Management, are highly renowned in Europe and beyond, Erasmus Medical Center (EMC) is the biggest and one of the most prestigious academic medical institutions and trauma centres in the Netherlands. At the present time, four of the most famous worldwide ranking tables have Erasmus University Rotterdam positioned as one of the top 100 institutions anywhere in the world. In addition, the university was ranked among the top ten business schools in Europe by the Financial Times. Times Higher Education placed Erasmus University Rotterdam in the top 20 universities in Europe and in the top 72 universities worldwide in their 2015 rankings. The university's social sciences programme was rated 40th in the world, while its clinical health programme was ranked 35th.
