Epsa Music (also known as EPSA), is an independent record company, originated in 1996 and specialized in the production, promotion and commercialization of Argentine music and artists of tango, Andean music, chamamé and folklore in general, as well as orchestral music. Founded by the Casella sisters, today it is chaired by Laura Tesoriero, CEO of the label and daughter of Laura Casella.[1]

Epsa was founded in 1968 as Electrical Products S.A., and began by manufacturing cassettes. In 1992 he launched his Epsa Music label,[2] of Argentine tango and folklore, and has grown to become one of the most important record labels in South America, bringing together a diverse mix of production and distribution, A&R, and digital music assets.[3]

History

Early years

Epsa Music was founded as an extension of Epsa, a precursor company in phonographic and digital formats led by Laura Casella, her daughter Laura Tesoriero, and her sisters Alba and Elba Casella. Epsa began manufacturing cartridges and tapes in 1968, and followed the natural evolution of the industry to become a leading producer and distributor of compact discs (CDs) in South America.[4]

Being the first company in Argentina to manufacture magazines, then cassettes, it was also the first company to have a machine to make compacts.[5] Mozart's Requiem, directed by Father Segade, is recorded as Epsa's first released album. Among the first artists who produced and distributed their music in these early days we can mention Aníbal Arias, Juanjo Domínguez, Juan Falú, Rudy and Niní Flores (as part of the Guitarras en el mundo albums),[6] Hilda Herrera or Adolfo Abalos.[7]

In 1992, his Epsa Music record label was launched and became the dominant Argentine tango and folk music label with a wide, varied and growing catalogue.

Alliance with The Orchard

In 2004, they reached an agreement with The Orchard label to distribute a large part of their repertoire of independent Argentine compositions.[8] Epsa has distributed its controlled catalog of South American music through The Orchard since August 2003, and has included internationally renowned artists such as the Sexteto Mayor (Grammy 2003 winners), El Arranque (international tango group that collaborated with Wynton Marsalis) and Astor Piazzolla (multi-platinum international artist), all of them Argentine.[9]

That same year, they organized an event called El concurso de La Falda,[10] where Esteban Riera would be the winner, who produced his debut album.[11]

Zapmusica.com

In 2006, they launched their new digital download site, www.zapmusica.com, this being a measure to reduce piracy with music converted into digital.[12] Together with DBN (Distribuidora Belgrano Norte), they were the pioneer companies in these services in Argentina.[13] Zap, launched in partnership with the Internet provider Fibertel of the Cable Visión group, and would be offered exclusively to Fibertel customers for the first six months.[14] The platform enjoyed great popularity and reach, according to Epsa statistics.[15]
