The words "environmentally friendly procedures" and "environmentally friendly processes" are marketing and sustainability terms that relate to products and services, legislation, rules, and policies that promise to have a decreased, minimum, or no negative impact on ecosystems or the environment.

These general words are used by businesses to market their products and services, and they are occasionally accompanied by other certifications that are more specialised, such as eco-labels. Greenwashing is a term that may be used to describe their misuse. It is recommended that businesses use environmentally friendly procedures in their manufacturing in order to increase the likelihood that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be met successfully. To be more specific, Sustainable Development Goal 12 assesses "sustainable consumption and production patterns" using 11 objectives and 13 indicators.

In order to create principles and methods for environmental labels and declarations, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has produced ISO 14020 and ISO 14024. Certifiers and eco-labelers are expected to adhere to these principles and procedures. In particular, these standards include the avoidance of financial conflicts of interest, the use of reliable scientific methodologies and generally acknowledged testing processes, as well as openness and transparency in the process of standard-setting.
