Eric Ronald Holder Jr. is an American individual known for his involvement in the fatal shooting of rapper and musician Nipsey Hussle on March 31, 2019, in the South Los Angeles neighborhood. The incident occurred outside Nipsey Hussle's Marathon Clothing store following a prior conversation with Holder, who then opened fire on the rapper and a group of individuals.[1] Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Eric Holder fled the scene but was later apprehended and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and firearm possession.[2]

Trial

Initially, Eric Holder was represented by Christopher Darden, known for his role as the prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trail.[3] However, Darden opted to cease representing Holder shortly thereafter, citing numerous threats as the reason for his decision.[4] On June 15, 2022 Holder's trial began with Deputy District Attorney John McKinney prosecuting the case. Despite being under heightened security measures due to the high-profile nature of the case, Eric Holder experienced an assault by another inmate while awaiting court proceedings. Holder suffered head injuries, including being knocked unconscious, and required stitches for the wounds sustained during the incident.[5] On July 6, 2022 Holder was found culpable for a single charge of first-degree murder, two charges each of attempted voluntary manslaughter and assault involving a firearm, and one charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.[6]

Community Impact

Following Nipsey Hussle's death in 2019, the South Los Angeles community experienced a notable and positive impact, characterized by a ceasefire among gang members—a development not seen since the 1992 Watts Gang Treaty.[7][8]
