Emily Jossam (born 18 August 1998) is a Malawian professional footballer who plays as a defender for FAZ Women Super Division club ZESCO United F.C., on a permanent contract.[1][2], and the Malawi women's national team, also known as The Scorchers.
Early life
Born on August 18, 1998, in Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre[3], Jossam is the first of five children born to her parents. She began playing football at the age of 7. Until the age of 10, she played on the streets of the Ndirande slum in Blantyre[4][5]. Then, at the age of 10 years, she got enrolled in the "Play Soccer Malawi"-project, which is a US-based NGO with local projects in 7 southern/western African countries, and is supported by FIFA and the national football association[6]. They enroll children in socioeconomically neglected areas (such as Ndirande) in a program that involves football training mainly as an incentive, teaches classes on topics such as healthy nutrition, hands out food, encourages children to seek higher education and provides scholarships for that. Jossam played for the Under 12, Under 15 and Under 20 teams of the project, and at the age of 20, having completed the program and her higher education, she was leading training sessions with the younger kids to give back to the program that helped her in the past.[7].
Playing career
Jossam started playing professional football for Blantyre Zero in Blantyre, which later was acquired by Nyasa Big Bullets FC[8]. Her biggest success with the team was winning the FAM Women's National Championship 2021, stopping a 6-year dominance by DD Sunshine whom they edged 3-1 in an exciting and scintillating final match which was played at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe[9]
