Emilie Bodoin is an American inventor and entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of Pure Lithium Corporation, a Chicago-based technology company, and was recognized in 2025 by Fastmarkets as Trailblazing Woman of the Year.[1].
Early Life and Career
Born in Royal Oak, MI in 1977, Bodoin spent her early years competing in equestrian sports[2]. She studied chemistry and international relations before moving to New York to pursue a career in finance, and served as Chief Technology Officer for G.C. Andersen Partners, a boutique investment bank in 2019 and 2020[3].
In 2015, Bodoin took a position as principal investigator on a lithium metal production project at Argonne National Laboratory, where she stayed until 2018, followed by a stint at New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, where she served as an Entrepreneur in Residence.[4]
Pure Lithium
In 2019, Emilie Bodoin co-founded Pure Lithium, a lithium battery technology company focused on developing a more affordable and sustainable type of battery, with MIT Professor Emeritus Donald R. Sadoway.[5] The proprietary battery technology is based on a patented process to extract pure lithium from brine and pair it with a vanadium cathode[6] developed jointly with Nobel Prize laureate Sir M. Stanley Wittingham in 2023,[7] to create a potentially safer, more sustainable, and efficient alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries[8][9][10].
Emilie Bodoin has been granted four U.S. patents and four joint patents for battery technologies. She also has more than a dozen individual and joint patent applications pending[7].
Emilie Bodoin's focus on lithium metal batteries began in 2012, driven by her interest in the material's superior energy storage potential compared to graphite-based alternatives used in lithium-ion batteries. Recognizing the untapped potential, Bodoin and MIT Emeritus Professor Donald R. Sadoway co-founded Pure Lithium Corporation in 2019.[11][12][13] They developed a process to extract pure lithium metal from brine and pair it with a vanadium cathode,[6] creating a safer, more sustainable, and efficient alternative to conventional batteries[8][9].
In 2024, Bodoin led the formation of a joint development partnership between Pure Lithium and Calgary-based lithium extraction technology company E3 Lithium to explore the construction of a pilot battery plant[14][15][16], reducing dependence on potentially vulnerable global supply chains[8][9].
In 2024, she led the formation of a joint development partnership between Pure Lithium and Calgary-based lithium extraction technology company E3 Lithium to explore the construction of a pilot battery plant.[14][15][16] The lithium for Pure Lithium battery can be produced entirely in North America, reducing dependence on potentially vulnerable global supply chains.[8][9]
In October 2024, Bodoin led the acquisition of all assets of Buffalo-based company Dimien Inc. with the intent of using the company’s zeta vanadium (ZVO), a low-cost cathode material with high energy density and improved safety compared to NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) and NCA (nickel-manganese-aluminum) cathodes used in Li-ion batteries[17][18][19]
In June 2025, Pure Lithium was recognized by Reuters Awards in the R&D category[20], and Bodoin herself was shortlisted for Fastmarkets Trailblazer Woman of the Year award[21], and Pure Lithium received the Best New Project award[22]. Pure Lithium won the 2025 Green Chemistry Challenge[23] award from the American Chemical Society for its brine to battery technology.
