Prof. RNDr. Emil Mazúr, DrSc. (Divina, 1925. February 9. – Bratislava, 1990. March 27.][1]) was a Slovak geographer, professor of geomorphology.
Life
Prof. Emil Mazúr was born in the village of Divina in the Žilina district. He grew up in this village and received his primary education. After graduating from high school in Žilina, he enrolled at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava. His interest in nature and landscape led him to study geography and history, which he successfully completed in 1950. A year later, he submitted a regional-geographical thesis "Geography of Javorníky" and after defending it, he received a doctorate in natural sciences.
In 1957, he became an associate professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. In 1959, he defended his candidate dissertation and received the degree of candidate of sciences. In 1965, he received the degree of doctor of geographical sciences (DrSc.) at Charles University in Prague. In 1975, he was appointed professor. In 1975 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the Slovak Academy of Sciences, in 1980 he was elected an academician of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the following year (1981) an academician of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
He was the president of the Slovak National Geographical Committee.
Work
He devoted his entire academic life to the geographical department of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In 1958 he became deputy director and in 1963 director of the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (until 1988).
From 1955 he lectured externally at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava and later also worked at the Faculty of Architecture of the Slovak Technical University (today's Slovak University of Technology).
After his initial regional-geographical work, he became particularly interested in geomorphology. In his research, he used his synthesising skills, especially in developing geomorphological typology. Later, he devoted himself to regional geography and focused on modern, integrated landscape research. Thanks to him, this issue became one of the important activities of the International Geographical Union (IGU). In 1980–1988, the IGU appointed him head of the Landscape Synthesis working group.
The results of his research are contained in a number of publications – several monographs and scientific studies, published in Czechoslovak and foreign periodicals. Among them, the internationally highly valued Atlas of the Slovak Socialist Republic and the Encyclopedia of Slovakia with his significant authorship and organizational contribution should be mentioned.
Prof. Mazúr carried out extensive organizational activities within the Presidium of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the Presidium of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He was, for example, the chairman of the Commission of the Presidium of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for the Environment and the vice-chairman of the Commission of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for Environmental Issues. He was the chairman of the National Geographic Committee, the chairman of the Slovak Association of Nature and Landscape Conservationists (1975-1989) and the chairman of the Slovak Geographical Society at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (1974-1978).
Professor Mazúr was a significant figure in Slovak, Czechoslovak, and international geography with great insight, organizational skills, and conceptual thinking.
Today
His work Landscape Synthesis in the Tatranská Lomnica Area (Mazúr et al, 1985), which presents a geographical model of landscape protection and management in national parks and protected landscape areas, is still relevant today. He applied the principles of landscape synthesis not only in landscape planning and solving environmental problems, but also as the chairman of the Slovak Association of Nature and Landscape Conservationists in the years 1975–1989.
