Ema Peter (born October 19, 1977, in Sofia, Bulgaria) is an award-winning [1] architectural photographer. Based in Vancouver, Canada, she is known her photojournalistic approach [2] that captures the relationship between built forms and the people who live and work within them. She has photographed buildings and interiors designed by such notable architects as Bjarke Ingels, Kengo Kuma, Michael Green Architecture and Patkau Architects.

Biography

Peter’s interest in photography began at the age of six when her father gave her a camera and taught her how to develop negative film in the family kitchen.[1][3] After earning a master's degree in photography at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia[4], she accepted an internship at the Magnum Photos Agency in Paris, where she discovered a passion for the work of street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. She has often cited the French photographer's concept of the decisive moment as having a significant influence on her own work[5] and in seeking out ideal light and shadow conditions.

In 2001, Peter immigrated to Canada and was hired by VXR Studios to photograph luxury hotels for Expedia.[6] She began photographing contemporary architectural buildings by Vancouver firms, eventually forming her own photography studio in 2005[7]. Her images have appeared in numerous publications worldwide including Azure (design magazine)|Azure, Architectural Record, Dwell (magazine)|Dwell, Dezeen, and The New York Times|New York Times.
