Elliot Gourlay (born 11 September 2001 in Manchester) is a professional rugby union player. He was promoted from the Sale Sharks junior academy squad [1] to the senior academy on 1st July 2020 as a full back [2].

Pre-professional career

Gourlay played rugby from the age of seven and football from the age of four. Immediately prior to his promotion to the Sale Sharks senior academy [2] he was playing for the junior academy [1] and Kirkham Grammar School[3] in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons as either full back or fly half. Before Kirkham Grammar School [3], he played for the Manchester Grammar School [4] team and Altrincham Kersal rugby club and represented the Cheshire County rugby team at under 16 level. He captained Altrincham Kersal under 16 rugby team to win the Cheshire County championship in the 2017/2018 season. Gourlay's earlier sporting experience included playing football and rugby for Altrincham Prep School and football for Hale United. As a young teenager he spent a brief spell with Everton F.C. academy before deciding that rugby was his preferred direction.

Academic career

Gourlay attended Oakfield Nursery School, Altrincham Prep School, Manchester Grammar School and Kirkham Grammar School [5]. He graduated from Kirkham Grammar School in 2020 with A-level qualifications in Geography, History and Politics. In addition to being part of the Sale Sharks senior academy team he is enrolled on a business studies degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University.
