Ellen Ehk Åkesson

Ellen Ehk Åkesson (born 1976) is a Swedish artist working mainly with ceramics, bronze and glass. She was born in a small village outside of Kalmar, Sweden, where she has lived for most of her life. She has her artist studio in Pukeberg in Nybro, Sweden where she lives together with her husband artist Markus Åkesson.[1]

She is represented by Berg Gallery in Stockholm as well as Galerie NeC in Paris.

Education

Ehk attended School of Design and Crafts, the Swedish University for Design and Crafts where she earned a Master of Applied Arts in 2002. Before this, she attended Capellagården, where she studied Ceramic Form and Craft from 1995 to 1997.[1]

Ceramic works

At the beginning of her artistic career, Ehk focused on traditional crafts and functional ceramics. However, during the last decade, she has shifted to contemporary sculpture.[2] Her works focus on organic form, often referencing forms from the type of old-growth forests common to Sweden.[1]

In 2019 Ehk was the first-ever recipient of the the Ulrica Hydman Vallien Grant[3] and tasked with creating a new line of glass works for Orrefors Kosta Boda. At the conclusion of the grant, she was invited to continue a partnership with Orrefors Kosta Boda where she also has a studio and works with contemporary glass sculpture.[4]

Awards, Collections and Public Commissions

In 2022, Ehk was awarded the Carl-Axel Valéns Artist Grant by the Carl-Axel Valén Foundation which included a stipend of 200 000 Swedish krona and an exhibition at the Art Museum in Eskilstuna.[5]

Ellen Ehk Åkesson has been awarded The Arts Grants Committee's working grant in 2007, 2012-2013, 2017-2018, 2020-2021. She was awarded the Ulrica Hydman Vallien Grant in 2019. Her works are included in numerous public collections such as, Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum, National Public Arts Council of Sweden, Stockholm Konst, The City of Gothenburg, Västragötalandsregionen, Region Stockholm, Region Uppsala and Region Örebro.

She has made large scale bronze sculptures for public commissions to the City of Stockholm and The National Public Arts Council of Sweden[6] and several municipalities around Sweden.
