Elizabeth Ai is a Chinese-Vietnamese-American filmmaker [1]. She is a recipient of a Primetime Emmy Award for producing brand work for National Geographic channels. [2] She is known for producing Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe (2008) [3], A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem (2019) [4], and Saigon Electric [5] (2011). Ai is currently directing and producing her feature film, New Wave, tentatively premiering in 2024. [6]
Career
Ai started her career as a writer and producer. She created content on ESPN and National Geographic.
In 2008, she worked on Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe as a producer. [7]
During her tenure at Vice Media, she created the original pilot for Bong Appétit (2014), which was selected as a series on Viceland.[8]
Later, Ai worked on the film A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem in 2019. This film was viewed on Public Broadcasting Service as a national viewing.[4]
Ai has received fellowships from Berlin Talent Campus [9], Center For Asian American Media [10], Film Independent[11], Sundance Institute [6], and Tribeca Institute. Her film projects are supported by California Humanities, Firelight Media [12], Cinereach, [13] Knight Foundation, Ford Foundation [14], and Independent Television Service. [15]

In 2008, Ai was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the San Diego Asian Film Festival for the film Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe.[16]
In 2012, Ai won the Golden Kite Prize, Silver Award for Saigon Electric.[17]

In 2013, Ai received the Audience Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival for Yellow Face. [19]
