Elise Kesselbeck

Elise Kesselbeck, née Hartmann (November 28th, 1870 - July 10th, 1956) was a German politician who was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Communist Party of Germany in Bremen.[1]

Early life and career before politics

Kesselbeck was born Elise Hartmann in 1870 to Heinrich Hartmann and Minna, née Dedekind in Hanover. Kesselbeck had one sister. In 1892, Kesselbeck moved to Bremen to work as a maid. While in this position, Kesselbeck got involved with servants' rights movement from around 1900. In 1902 she married Alfred Carl Kesselbeck, however she continued to work as a maid. [2][3]

Career

Initially, Kesselbeck was active in the SPD. However, she went into the KPD in 1918, and because active in the suffrage and feminism scene in Bremen, with other women such as Gesine Becker. She was elected into the Workers' and Soldiers' Council's 4th district together with Anna Stiegler, however was unable to work due to the military suppression of Bremen Council Republic by the Gerstenberg Corps in 1919. In response to the suppression, Kesselbeck organized a funeral service in the trade union building.

After the Bremen communists decided to participate in the Bremen National Assembly, Kesselbeck entered the assembly in March of 1919, and later fully assumed her role as a member of the assembly. Kesselbeck left the assembly in 1923.[1][2]

Later life

Kesselbeck became the chairwoman of a woman and children's choir, and later was a member of Hermann Böse's workers' choir, from which she resigned from in 1933, fully departing from the political scene.

Kesselbeck would live in Bremen until 1944, from which she would leave the city due to her home being destroyed by a bomb, though she moved back in 1949. After the death of her husband in 1955, Kesselbeck moved into the Friedehorst retirement home, where she remained until her death in 1956. [1][2]
