Elio Villafranca is a jazz pianist who was born in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. Elio would become classically trained in piano, percussion and composition in the music conservatory at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba.[1] For his work in the album Things I Wanted to do by Chembo Corniel, Elio Villafranca was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year at the 2010 Grammy Awards.[2] Elio Villafranca is currently a professor at Juilliard School of Music, where he specializes in jazz ensemble.[3]

Throughout his career Elio Villafranca has been awarded many awards including 2018 Downbeat Critic's Poll Rising Stars Keyboard, 2017 Sunshine Award, 2019 Downbeat Critic's Poll Rising Stars Pianist, and more. In 2021 Elio Villafranca became a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient in the field of Music Composition.[4]
