Biography

Elena Okopnaya was born in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). From early childhood, she studied ballet and performed in the ballet theater "The Nutcracker" from 1989 to 2000.

She studied at the Specialized Educational Scientific Center of Ural Federal University until 2002, then continued her education at the Institute of International Relations (IIR), majoring in linguistics and intercultural communication until 2004.

From 2003 to 2007, she worked at VGIK film studio as a film director assistant. In 2009, she graduated from VGIK’s Faculty of Producing and Economics.

Between 2017 and 2019, she studied directing at the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) film school, in the workshop of Pavel Lungin and Irina Volkova.

Okopnaya began her career at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio as a location manager, administrator, and post-production administrator before moving into the art department, where she focused on film production design.

She produced the contemporary dance project "Doors Wide Open" featuring artists from the Bolshoi Ballet, and for many years curated the film club at the Practice Theater.[1]

Exhibition Activity

Curator of the experimental project "Now 2017" (together with Antonio Jeuza), which presented a dialogue between art and cinema and expanded the traditional boundaries of cinema as an art form. The project showcased experiments from the 1970s using video technology, altering cinematic narratives and transforming the exhibition space into a new perceptual experience where the main protagonist became the object. The exhibition was held at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA).[2][3][4][5]

Visual style

Elena Okopnaya’s work is distinguished by meticulous attention to detail and a special focus on the historical and emotional context through documentary materials. Her style harmoniously combines artistic expressiveness with the authenticity of the era, giving the films a profound visual layer.[6]
