Eiman Yousif Hassan Madani (born 17 December 1992 in Khartoum, Sudan), is a Sudanese actress, singer and women's rights activist best known for her character Mona in the 2023 drama film, Goodbye Julia. Directed by Mohamed Kordofani, the film scooped Sudan's first-ever international nomination[1] at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 winning the Prix de la Liberté (Freedom Award). The film was selected by the Sudanese National Committee operating in exile to compete for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards[2].
Early Life & Career
Eiman is the youngest child of Yousif Madani and Nadia Mahdi. She attended El Ezba Primary School and completed her secondary education at Ahmed Bashir Elabadi High School in 2009. Subsequently, she pursued a Bachelor of Sciences in Management at the University of Khartoum, graduating in 2013 but would later returned to her alma mater to study an MBA in Project Management.
During her academic years, Eiman actively participated in musical, theatre and cultural events. In 2015, she inaugurated the School of Management Faculty Coral at the University of Khartoum. In 2020, Eiman moved to Cairo, Egypt after the Sudanese Revolution in which she played an active role.
Her portrayal of Mona in the award-winning drama film Goodbye Julia marked Eiman's significant entry into the realm of cinema. Goodbye Julia traces the journey of Mona (portrayed by Eiman Yousif), a retired singer from northern Sudan entangled in a strained marriage. Plagued by guilt for concealing a murder, Mona endeavors to atone by offering shelter to Julia, the widow of the deceased from southern Sudan, along with her son, Daniel.
Faced with the challenge of confessing her wrongdoing to Julia, Mona opts to move forward, unaware that the nation's unrest might seep into her home, forcing her to confront the repercussions of her past actions. It takes place in Khartoum during the last years of Sudan as a united country, shortly before the 2011 secession of South Sudan.
