Eileen Furlong is an Irish scientist (molecular biologist) in the fields Transcription/Chromatin, Developmental Biology and Genomics.[1][2] She is noted for her work in understanding how the genome is regulated, in particular to how developmental enhancers function, how they interact within three dimensional chromatin topologies and how they drive cell fate decisions during embryogenesis.[3][4][5] She is Head of the Department of Genome Biology at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Eileen is an elected member of EMBO (2013),[6][7] the Academia Europaea (2016),[8] and to EMBO’s research council (2018).[9]

Education

Eileen Furlong obtained a B.Sc (Hons) at University College Dublin, and a Ph.D. at the Conway institute at UCD, studying transcriptional regulation of immediate early response genes in the lab of Prof. Finian Martin. She performed her postdoctoral studies in the Dept. of Developmental Biology at Stanford University, in Prof. Matt Scott’s lab, developing genomics tools to functionally dissect developmental programmes during embryogenesis.

Academic career and research

Furlong started her independent lab at EMBL in 2002,[10] and became Head of Dept. (Genome Biology) in 2009. Her research integrates genomics, genetics and Computational biology|computational approaches to functionally dissect the role of non-coding cis-regulatory elements in the regulation of gene expression.[11][12] In particular, using mesoderm specification into different muscle primordia as a model system. Her group’s research has uncovered a number of properties of Enhancer (genetics)|enhancers[13][14][15][16] and enhancer-Promoter_(genetics)|promoter communication, including pre-formed enhancer-promoter ‘Nuclear_organization#DNA_looping|loops’[17][18] and the ability of many enhancer’s to function even when larger Topologically_associating_domain |chromatin topologies are perturbed,[19][20][21] in addition to mechanisms that allow enhancers to withstand the effects of genetic variation, including collective transcription factor recruitment,[22][23] genetic epistasis within enhancers[24] and promoters,[25] and extensive redundancy[26], which together contribute to Canalisation_(genetics)|canalization in developmental patterning.

Furlong’s work was instrumental in the development and application of genomic approaches to understand embryonic development,[27] including the development of Drosophila microarrays,[28][29] an automatic transgenic embryo sorter,[30][31] ChIP in embryos,[32][33][34] tissue specific[35][36][37] and single cell approaches[38] - which combined with genetic manipulations provided some of the first insights into developmental programmes during embryogenesis at a genome-wide scale.[39][40]

Furlong is a member of the editorial board of the Journals Developmental Cell,[41] Development,[42] Molecular Systems Biology,[43] Current Opinion in Genetics Develop.,[44] Current Opinion in Cell Biol.,[45] an ERC panel member[46][47] and a main organisers of the international Conferences “From Functional Genomics to Systems Biology”, “EMBL Transcription and Chromatin” meeting, and a keynote speaker of a number of conferences.[48][49][50][51][52][53][54]
