Edward Gallagher (born 24 June, 1991) is a Scottish football coach and sporting director, who is currently the head of recruitment of Brighton & Hove Albion W.F.C. Gallagher has over ten years of experience within women's football, in his native Scotland with Celtic F.C. and Rangers F.C. and throughout England, USA and Finland.
He has worked across both youth and senior women's football in roles including Sporting Director, Head Coach and Academy Manager.
Early Life & Education
Gallagher was born in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. He attended St. Ambrose High School in Coatbridge.
Academically, he attended the University of Strathclyde, University of Edinburgh and University of Central Arkansas[1] in the USA gaining an undergraduate degree in sport science, a postgraduate degree in education and a masters degree in sports management.
Gallagher currently holds his UEFA A Licence through the Scottish FA as well as his Talent ID and Advanced Children's Licence. He has completed Sporting Director qualifications through Focus Sports Education.
Career
Gallagher has built up over 10 years' of coaching experience within the women's game at both youth academy and first team level.
He began his career as a GK Coach working at local club Rossvale FC before moving to Rangers FC to be part of Angie Hind's backroom team. After one season in the Scottish Women's Premier League he moved to Finland, to join Finnish champions, Åland United[2]
During the 2014 season, Åland United finished 2nd in the Naisten Liiga and also competed in the UEFA Women's Champions League. ÅU were knocked out by Polish side Medyk Konin who reached the Round of 32.
Gallagher spent 2015 in the US, working at University of California, Santa Cruz, gaining experience in the NCAA.
In 2016, he joined Celtic Football Club as Girls' Academy Manager and also as Head Coach of the women's development team who played in the Scottish Women's Football League. During his spell at Celtic, he served as Interim 1st Team Head Coach before Eddie Wolecki Black was appointed as permanent Head Coach.[3] Gallagher returned to his academy role, leading the U19 girls side to a Scottish Cup beating Aberdeen F.C. Women and National Performance League after a last game win against beating Heart of Midlothian W.F.C.. [4]
In 2020, with women's football halted due to the pandemic, Gallagher moved to London, taking on the role as General Manager at London City Lionesses[5] in the FA Women's Championship. He was quickly promoted to Sporting Director, overseeing all football operations at the club.[6]
During his time at the club, Gallagher worked closely with Head Coach Melissa Phillips. The club signed numerous players from across Europe and the US, finishing 2nd behind eventual winners Liverpool FC Women in the 2021–22 FA Women's Championship.
In 2023, Gallagher joined Women's Super League side Brighton & Hove Albion where he oversees player recruitment for the women's first team.[7]
Brighton have managed to attract players such as Fran Kirby[8] and Nikita Parris as they aim to compete towards the top end of the league.[9]
