Eduardo Neira (Bahía Blanca, Argentina, 1956), known as Roth,[1] is an Argentine self-taught architect, environmentalist, philanthropist and entrepreneur living in Mexico.[2][3] He is the founder and CEO of the AZULIK Group, the architectural firm Roth Architecture, and the interdisciplinary group Roth Design.[4]

Life and career

Early years

Eduardo Neira was born in Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and grew up in the city of Esquel, Chubut province.[5] At the age of 20 he settled in Mexico, where he worked in advertising, printing, cinematography, commerce and media companies.[6]

Roth produced some audiovisual projects influenced by the director Emilio "el Indio" Fernández. He also ventured into the publishing market and in the newspapers Convergencia in Mexico City and Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, in addition to painting.

Architecture

In 2017 he founded Roth Architecture, an architecture studio whose projects are integrated into the natural environment that seeks to respect the original layout of the land and uses endemic elements and native construction techniques, trying to avoid the use of heavy machinery and to maintain the natural topography.[6]

His most popular buildings are AZULIK sustainable luxury hotel located in Tulum and AZULIK City of Arts complex in Francisco Uh May,[7] where the SFER IK contemporary art museum is located,[8] the headquarters of Roth Architecture, a fab lab in the middle of the jungle and the Jungle Cuisine restaurant.[9]

In 2026, Roth will complete his first residential project, AZULIK Residences Tulum,[10] with his studio, and in 2027 he will open his first international hotel in the desert, AZULIK AlUla, in the city of Al-'Ula, Saudi Arabia.[11][12]

Awards

Through Roth Arquitecture, Roth has won the following prizes:

  • Two Architizer A+A Awards for SFER IK Uh May AZULIK Residence[13]
  • Best Cultural Space for SFER IK Museion Uh May at the IDEA-TOPS AWARDS 2019[14][15]
  • Overall Winner for AZULIK Residence at the SBID International Design Awards[16]
  • Small Museum / Art Gallery for SFER IK Uh May at the Interior Design Magazine Best of the Year Awards[17]
  • Best House of the Year for AZULIK Residence and Emerging Designer of the Year at the Frame Awards[18]
  • New Culture Destination of the Year for SFER IK at the Leading Cultural Destination Awards[19]
  • Best Artistic Architecture Studio and Best Completed Innovative Commercial Project for ZAK IK at the BUILD Architecture Awards[20]

Art

In 2017 Roth designed and built two museums called SFER IK that showcase contemporary art.[5] They were recognized as part of the 100 World's Greatest Places to visit by Time magazine.[21] The museum located in Francisco Uh May obtained the Leading Cultural Destination Berlin Award as the most relevant cultural destination in Latin America.[22]

Philanthropy

Roth created the Enchanting Transformation Foundation in 2009 with the aim of contributing to the comprehensive development of native communities, the environment and animals, as well as promoting the preservation and recovery of the jungle.[23][24][25]
