Elham Heidari is the first Iranian woman who became a National Wrestling Referee.[1][2] [3]

She is a freelance wrestling journalist/activist and founder of non-profit Wrestling Podium Radio based in Canada.[4][5][6]

Wrestling Career and Education

Heidari began her wrestling career as the secretary of Iranian Wrestling Federation's research committee. She was appointed to this position by the wrestling president, Mohammad Reza Taleghani in 2003.[7] Heidari cooperated with the federation until 2006 and later immigrated to Edmonton, Canada, where she was finally able to become a wrestling referee.[8]

Heidari who went on to receive a Master of Arts in History from the University of Alberta, has been active as wrestling official for Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association since 2013 and for Canadian Association of Wrestling Officials since 2016.[9]

Activism

Wrestling Media Run by Female Members

Heidari founded Wrestling Podium Radio, a non-profit wrestling media that seeks to support female journalists and writers in the field of wrestling.[4] She has been one of the many Iranian women who were deprived from participating in their national sport, wrestling.[10] Despite its worldwide reputation for male wrestling at the international arenas, Iran is among the very few countries where women's wrestling still does not exist.[11][12] By founding a non-profit wrestling media organization Heidari advocates the attendance of female members in international wrestling tournaments and relying on their skills in analyzing the sport of wrestling.[6]

Wrestling Outfit for Muslim Women

In order to advance gender equity through wrestling, Heidari proposed the first fully covered wrestling active-wear to Iran Wrestling Federation in 2017.[13][14] The outfit was designed to engage Iranian women in the sport of wrestling as the main barrier for them to compete in international tournaments was the lack of religiously-appropriate clothing. Cooperating with Iran Wrestling Federation Heidari introduced her design to the UWW Women and Sport Award competition in 2018.[15] The outfit eventually was approved by UWW in 2018 and resulted in introducing a new style of wrestling called Women Classic Style.
