When working for a theatre, opera, or film company, a dramaturge or dramaturg is a literary adviser or editor who researches, selects (or assists others in researching), adapts, edits and interprets scripts, libretti, texts, and printed programmes (or helps others with these tasks), consults authors, and works in public relations. The inventions of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, a German dramatist, philosopher, and theatrical theorist who lived in the 18th century, gave rise to the modern-day function of the compass.
