Dragon Ball Legends (ドラゴンボール レジェンズ, Doragon Bōru Rejenzu) (also known in all caps as DRAGON BALL LEGENDS or DB LEGENDS or simply known as DBL and LEGENDS by players) is a 2018 video game developed and published by BNE Entertainment. The game "features action-packed anime action RPG gameplay." It also features a brand-new story mode and a new protagonist (an anmesiac Saiyan by the name of Shallot). The game received generally mixed reviews.

Gameplay

Legends is a card game that requires players to defeat all their opponents to win the game. Usuable cards include Strike Cards (red cards), Blast Cards (yellow cards), Special Move Cards (blue cards with a sparked orb), Special Cards (green cards that can apply a buff to the user or a debuff to the opponent), Ultimate Cards (light blue cards with a spiked outline) and Awakened Cards (purple cards that are used in a similar manner to Ultimate Cards). After using 7 Dragon Ball Arts Cards (any type of card except Ultimate and Awakened cards with Dragon Balls on their top left corner) the player can activate a Rising Rush, which uses the four Cards held in their hand (players must choose a card that is different from their opponent's chosen card in order for the move to work, otherwise the opponent will be able to counterattack and interrupt the Rush). Strike Cards will be portrayed as teleporting kicks and punches, Blast Cards are portrayed as a flurry of ki blasts, Special Cards are portrayed as throws, and Special Move Cards are portrayed as normal.

Players can tap on the screen once to fire a single ki blast. They can also swipe up to instantly close the gap between them and the opponent, and during this, they can perform a "Quick Attack", which conists of swiping up and tapping the screen in quick succession.

Legends releases brand new characters during events such as an Anniversary or a "Legends Festival". The character rarities are HERO (the lowest), EXTREME, SPARKING (some Sparking characters have the LEGENDS LIMITED tag and can perform a Legendary Finish by using a certain Card on the last enemy character during a battle), and ULTRA (the highest rarity up-to-date; all Ultra characters have special animations).

Players can Summon to get "Z Power" for characters. To summon, a player needs a certain amount of a currency (such as the game's main currrency, Chrono Crystals) or a certain amount of tickets that match with the summon's name. When a player summons, an animation of a fight between Goku and Frieza will play, and the quality of the animation determines the characters the player gets (ie: Vegeta helps Goku defeat Frieza, Trunks and Vegeta fight Frieza instead of Goku, Broly arrives and tosses Frieza away, resulting in Goku and Vegeta using the Potara to fuse into Vegito to fight Broly).

These are the playable game modes in Legends:

  1. PvP (playable upon reaching a certain point in the game's story
  2. Story (the game's story)
  3. Events (limited-time events and permanent events that players can play to receive rewards)
  4. Hyperdimensional Co-Op (the player plays with a "Buddy" (another player) to fight a Co-Op Boss)

Plot

In Part 1 (The Saiyan Who Crossed Space-Time) of the story, Shallot[1] starts to regain some of his memories while allying with the series' main characters (such as Goku, Bulma, and Beerus) while training in order to defeat Raditz[2]. He meets a hooded man that looks just like him and fights him, only to be defeated. He decides to train harder in order to defeat the hooded man.

In Part 2 (Allies with the Ruthless Emperor), Shallot reluctantly becomes allies with Frieza in order to save Bulma from Turles, who first appeared in Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might[3]. After they rescue Bulma, Frieza ends the alliance and orders his men to kill Shallot, Vegeta, and Nappa. Nappa fights the Ginyu Force alone so Vegeta and Shallot can combat Frieza. After Frieza mortally wounds Vegeta, the latter reminds Shallot about Saiyan pride. Shallot becomes a Super Saiyan and declares to bring back both Vegeta and the Saiyan race's pride. Shallot then defeats and kills Frieza.

In Part 3 (The Androids of Ruin), Shallot meets up with other characters such as Cabba and Android 17 and 18. He works with them in order to track down Android 16 and defeat Cell.

In Part 4 (The Terrifying Super Cell Games), Cell manages to absorb 17 and 18 and starts the Cell Games, the same way he did in Dragon Ball Z. However, both Shallot and Gohan manage to go Super Saiyan 2 and defeat Cell.

Reception

The game has a 69 out of 100 on Metacritic (based on 7 critic reviews), which the site characterizes as "mixed or average."
