Dr Shahida Kamal was born on 20th May 1968 at Cherukulam near Anchal in Kollam. Her father was Abusali Melevila and mother was Sainaba Beevi.

She was an active member in a students’ organization when studying at Govt. High School in Vayala. Later, she joined Kerala Students Union (KSU) and was nominated to the State Level Committee of KSU during her college days.

She was elected as the University Union Councilor and became the first female candidate to be elected to the post in the history of St. John’s College, Anchal. It gave her the confidence to contest for the post of University Union General Secretary in the Kerala University Union Election in 1990. She was defeated by only two votes, but it was a triumphant moment for her. She became the first female candidate contesting the post of Union General Secretary in Kerala University Union Election.

She was nominated as a member of the All India Congress Committee in 2006 and elected as the All India General Secretary of Mahila Congress in 2007. In 2009, she contested in the parliament election as a Congress candidate from Kasargod. She got the congress ticket in Kerala Assembly Election 2011. She contested from Chadayamangalam assembly constituency.

Besides, she served in the Social Welfare Board, Censor Board, Police Advisory Board, Railway Consultative Committee.

She joined Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 2016. She was appointed as the member of Kerala Women's Commission on 1st November 2017. She has been working as a member in the state committee of Mahila Association.

She got married on 13th April 1995. Kamaludeen is her husband.

She has given Innumerable lectures in many platforms and seminars for the upliftment of the backward sections of the society. Essays and articles have been published in the mainstream media for the empowerment and protection of women, children and minorities.
