Rachana Vidhi (born 1988) is an Indian American inventor, engineer, and educator known for her innovations in the field of renewable energy. In 2024, Vidhi was inducted[1] into the Florida Inventors hall of fame for her work on battery storage technologies and renewable energy integration[2].

She was also included into GreenBiz 30 under 30 (later renamed Trellis 30 under 30) [3] for her work on sustainability in 2018.

Early life and education

Vidhi was born and raised in the city of Chhapra, Bihar in India. She earned her undergraduate degree in Energy Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT) in 2010[4], followed by a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Florida in 2014[5], where she conducted research at the university's Clean Energy Research Center. She later completed a Master’s in Management from Harvard University.

Career and Key Contributions

Vidhi began her professional journey in energy systems optimization[2] and lifecycle modeling for renewable projects at NextEra Energy, contributing to several utility-scale solar and battery storage projects, including the development of the Manatee Energy Storage Center[2], one of the world’s largest solar-powered battery facilities. She also helped design the world's first large-scale DC coupled battery system[3].

She holds nine U.S. patents[1], primarily in the areas of lithium-ion battery degradation modeling, hybrid energy systems optimization, and lifecycle cost estimation. She has also authored over a dozen scholarly articles on various topics such as electric vehicles, battery storage, passive cooling and low temperature power generation [6].

Vidhi has served on the boards[4] of American Solar Energy Society and the International Solar Energy Society, promoting mentorship and diversity in energy. She also founded the USF student chapter of International Solar Energy Society to engage students in renewable energy research and advocacy.
