Peter Barnes was a general practitioner based in Wolverhampton.
Early life and education
He was born in Ceylon in 1928 to English parents who were based there after World War I. The youngest of three children, he was sent to boarding school in England at 3 and spent holidays with family in Somerset. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and continued his post-graduate qualifications at Dublin's Rotunda maternity hospital.
Career
In 1952 Dr Barnes joined the Merchant Navy as a Medical Officer, and travelled twice around the world. Returning to the UK, he went into general practice in the 1960s. He founded the surgery in Wombourne with Dr Fraser Dukes.
At 65, he left the NHS, and went to the University of Birmingham and qualified in occupational health medicine. Peter went on to work for many different companies in the West Midlands including the Express & Star, Goodyear, Muller as well as the Telford Occupational Health Service. Peter finally retired at 75.
Peter was a renowned "gentlemen doctor".
