Dr. Jasvant Modi is a retired gastroenterologist who owns four hospitals and supports philanthropy in education and healthcare.[1] His passion for philanthropy and sharing Jainism values through education and healthcare projects extends throughout parts of India and the United States. He endeavors to support communities and inject resources as needed to create healthy, thriving neighborhoods.[2]

Early life, education, and career

Dr. Jasvant Modi was born in Godhra, India in 1951. He immigrated to the United States in 1975.[3]

Dr. Modi received his medical degree from B.J. Medical College. He completed his residency in Chicago, Illinois. As a medical practitioner, Dr. Modi valued an approach that considered the unique needs of each patient with compassion and empathy.[4] He conducted gastrointestinal consultations, endoscopy procedures, colonoscopies, cancer screenings, treated digestive disorders, and provided follow-up care as part of his practice.[5]

Dr. Jasvant Modi retired from gastroenterology in 2014. Since retirement, Dr. Modi acquired four hospitals, with the mission of supporting local communities.[6] Each hospital serves as a community pillar, providing resources that address the needs of their residents.

Additional activities

Dr. Jasvant Modi’s wife, Dr. Meera Modi, also practices medicine as an internist. Both are followers of Jainism.

Dr. Modi supports educational and healthcare philanthropic activities in India and the United States. In 2023, he donated to the Bhagawan Vasu Pujya Swami Post-Doctoral Fellowship Endowment at the University of Pittsburgh to foster advanced academic research.[7] He also donated to the University of Birmingham to establish a Jainism Studies and Research program.[8] His philanthropic model is based on friends, family, society, and faith.[4]

In December 2023, Dr. Modi donated $800,000 to California State University, Northridge to support a professorship program on Jain Studies.[9]
