Dr. Andrew Wayne Mund (March 16, 1944 – September 6, 2021), also known as Dr. A. Wayne Mund and Fisher-Mund, was an American pastor, theologian, missionary, and radio broadcaster. He founded Fishers of Men Ministries International (FOMMI) and served as pastor of Fishermen Baptist Church in Bon Secour, Alabama. He was known for his Christian radio programs that continue to air globally.[1]
Early Life and Education
Mund was born in Bon Secour, Alabama, and raised in a fishing family. He attended William Carey University, studied under Peter S. Ruckman at Pensacola Bible Institute, and received a Th.D. from Great Plains Baptist Divinity School.
Ministry and Missionary Work
After pastoring two churches, Mund founded Fishermen Baptist Church and FOMMI in 1989. His ministry emphasized evangelism in seacoast and international port communities, including discreet missionary work in countries hostile to Christianity. FOMMI continues after his passing.
His ministry was often marked by the use of nautical imagery to communicate Christian teachings. He was known for combining biblical messages with metaphors drawn from his upbringing in the fishing industry.
Broadcasting
Mund produced two syndicated Christian radio shows: A Fisherman’s Five Minute Look at the Book and The Mariner’s Call. These continue to air on over 70 stations, including the Fundamental Broadcasting Network.[2] His shows are also available as a podcast titled Fisher-Mund Speaking.[3]
Publications
Mund authored several devotional works using maritime themes:
- Nautical Notes (ISBN 0978932552)
- Anchors of the Faith (ISBN 0978932579)
Legacy
Mund was a respected figure in the independent Baptist community. During the aftermath of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, he was featured in a New York Times article for leading prayers at Fishermen Baptist Church and providing spiritual support to his Gulf Coast community.[1] His radio programs and ministry efforts continue through FOMMI, now overseen by his wife and team. Mund passed away on September 6, 2021, due to complications from pneumonia related to COVID-19. His obituary was published by Cason Funeral Service.[4]
