Dr. Afzal Javed is a British-Pakistani Psychiatrist, Professor and Author.[1] He is currently a Consultant Psychiatrist and an Honorary Honorary Professor, Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham, UK & Clinical Associate Teacher at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick UK.[2] He was named President of World Psychiatric Association (WPA) effective October 2020.[3]

Dr. Javed is a renowned Consultant Psychiatrist, who specializes in Social and Transcultural Psychiatry, Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Schizophrenia.[4] During his career, Dr. Javed has served on the boards of several prolific organizations including the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK, World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR) and the World Psychiatric Association (WPA).[5]

Dr. Javed has published eight books and over 150 scientific papers and monographs on psychiatry.[6] Dr. Javed is a member of several national and international associations and has organized multiple conferences in the field of Psychiatry.[7] He is the recipient of various National Awards on Mental Health and has been featured in several media outlets for his work. [8]

Early life and education

Dr. Javed completed his bachelor’s degree from the King Edward Medical College, University of Punjab in 1977. Later, Dr. Javed enrolled at the University of Edinburgh, where he pursued an MPhil and then subsequently trained at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry & Maudsley Hospital London.

Career

Dr. Javed started his career in 1982 as a Consultant Psychiatrist & Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in Pakistan & joined NHS (UK) in 1996, a leading government hospital and healthcare agency.[9] He is currently working as an Honorary Professor, Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham & Honorary Clinical Associate Teacher at the Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, Chairman of the Pakistan Psychiatric Research Center, Fountain House, and President of World Psychiatric Association (WPA). [10]

In 2004, Dr. Javed became the Deputy / Associate Registrar and a board member at the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists, where he served for over three years. In 2005, he played a pivotal role in founding the WPA Section on Psychiatry in Developing Countries.[11] In the same year, he also became the chairman of the West Midlands Division at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. In 2006, Dr. Javed was appointed as the Co-Chairperson of the WPA Task Force on Brain drain.[12]

In 2007, Dr. Javed was appointed as the Secretary-General of the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation and the chairman of the Richmond Fellowship Foundation International.[13]

In 2008, Dr. Javed was promoted to the post of Co-Chairperson from the secretary of the WPA Section on Psychiatry in Developing Countries. In the same year, he also became a member of the WPA Standing Committee on Ethics. A year later, he also became an advisor of the WPA Task Force, assisting in Developing Guidelines for partnership with patients, Carers & Families. In 2011, he became the Executive Secretary for Scientific Sections World Psychiatric Association.[14]

Dr. Javed has also served as the president of the Asian Federation of Psychiatric Associations (AFPA) from 2017 to 2019, President of World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR) from 2012 to 2015. He is currently President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and due to complete his tenure in 2023.[15]
