Dorado Beach Resort is a private luxury resort located on the coast of Dorado, Puerto Rico. It is owned and operated by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company

History

Dorado Beach Resort, then known as Dorado Beach, was first developed by Dr. Alfred Livingston in 1905. It was developed as a coconut and citrus plantation and consisted of 1,700 acres[1].

Clara Livingston, the daughter of Dr. Alfred Livingston, took over the management of the property upon her father’s death. She went on to construct a house for herself, called Su Casa as well as a private airstrip. Su Casa is an 8,000 square foot beachside residence that features 5 bedrooms as well as its own complimentary concierge service. Guests are still welcome to stay at Su Casa as it represents the heritage of the property. Clara Livingston was a pilot herself and became friends with Amelia Earhart, an American female aviation pioneer. Su Casa is where Amelia Earhart stayed before beginning her attempt at a solo flight around the world. This was her last known stop before she disappeared crossing the Pacific Ocean.

Laurance S. Rockefeller, son of John D. Rockefeller Jr., purchased the property in 1955 and began to transform it to what it is known as today. He wanted to transform the property into the Caribbean’s first eco-resort. The Dorado Beach Resort, as created by Rockefeller, held its official opening on December 1, 1958. The opening of the resort featured 150 of Rockefeller’s most influential and friends at the time, including famous athletes, actors, as well as politicians. Some of the hotel’s guests were Joe Namath, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Joan Crawford, and Presidents John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, and George Bush Sr[1]

TPC Dorado Beach

When Dorado Beach Resort opened in 1958, the property featured two 9-hole golf courses, named the East Course and West Course. These courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., a well-known golf course architect. In 1966, both courses added 9-holes, making them traditional 18-hole golf courses. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. also made sure to construct the courses while respecting the natural landscape around the courses. The courses run alongside a tropical forest, various fruit trees, as well as a lagoon.

In 2015, the Dorado Beach Resort’s golf courses were added to the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Network. Now the resort’s golf club is regarded as TPC Dorado Beach, meaning that they are operated by the PGA tour and feature or have featured PGA Tour events[2].
