Donald G. Rainwater II (born September 30, 1963) is an information technology professional and political candidate in Indiana, currently seeking office as the Libertarian candidate for Governor in the 2020 Indiana gubernatorial election.[1]

Early life & career

Rainwater is a native of Central Indiana, graduating from Warren Central High School (Indiana) in 1981. In 1982, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for 8 years with honorable discharge in 1990 at the rank of Yeoman Second Class.[2] After his term in the Armed Forces, Rainwater taught computer courses and entered the private sector in software and computer engineering, obtaining multiple professional certifications [3] while managing related businesses in Central Indiana over the next several years.[4]

Political career

Citing dismay with the trajectory of Indiana politics, Rainwater first ran as the Libertarian candidate in the 2018 Indiana House of Representatives District 24 election, garnering 2.8% of the vote. [5] Then, Rainwater ran for the mayor of Westfield, Indiana in 2019 - again as a Libertarian - against incumbent Andy Cook in the 2019 elections;[6] he received 38.6% of the vote while Cook received 61.4%.[7]

Rainwater then sought the Libertarian nomination for Governor of Indiana at the party's 2020 Indiana state convention, besting Bill Levin in a closely-contested vote. Capitalizing on Republican incumbent Eric Holcomb's unpopularity due to many controversial responses to the COVID-19 crisis and other counter-conservative platform legislation, Rainwater's profile has enhanced considerably while advocating for limited government, gaining unprecedented polling numbers and national coverage with all-volunteer, grassroots support.[8][9][10][11]

Personal life

Rainwater is married, sharing with his wife a blended family that includes 6 children and 3 grandchildren.
