Dominyka Podziute was a Lithuanian soccer player who played as a goalkeeper for Seaham Coast, Newcastle United, Hartlepool United and Chester-le-Street Town.

Youth

Podziute was scouted to join Sunderland RTC, and stayed there for two years before moving to Washington, and later Durham WFC[1].

Club career

Podziute moved to Newcastle United in 2018. Podziute played for Newcastle United Reserves for the 2018-19 season, making her debut in a 5-1 win over Leeds United Ladies Reserves in October 2018[2]. She would make further appearances for the reserves team in matches against Middlesbrough Reserves, Hull City Reserves, Sheffield United Reserves, Cramlington United, Blackburn Rovers Development, Durham Reserves and Huddersfield Town Development.

Podziute made her debut for the main Newcastle United team at the start of the 2019-20 season, in a 2-0 loss to Barnsley[3]. Grace Donnelly, the regular first choice goalkeeper for Newcastle United, suffered a long-term injury midway through the 2019-20 season, so Podziute was given the chance to start in the first team consistently.

On 6 October 2019 Newcastle United won 2-1 against Bolton Wanderers in the Women's FA Cup to progress in the competition[4], but were knocked out on 27 October after a 3-1 loss to Chester-le-Street Town[5]. Podziute played in another competition for Newcastle United in November 2019, losing 1-0 to Bolton Wanderers in the FA Women's National League Plate[6]. On 23 February 2020 Podziute played in the Women's County Cup semi-final, with Newcastle United beating Alnwick Town 6-2[7].

Podziute moved to Hartlepool United for the 2021-22 season, with her signing announced on 21 July 2021[8].

Death

On 12 April 2022 Podziute's father and sister visited her home in Shotton Colliery after failing to contact her for several days. The police were called and after entering the house, discovered that she had passed away by hanging. In the days and months that followed it was reported that up to 37 searches for suicide note quotes were found on her mobile phone, and that she had a history of depression[9]. An inquest into her death on 14 June recorded a verdict of suicide.
