Dominique Alonga is a young woman, social entrepreneur, author and blogger. She is the founder and CEO of Imagine We Rwanda, a bookstore, publishing house and library founded in 2014.[1]

Education

Alonga studied the bachelors in media studies and specialised in Public Relations and Event Management at Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College in India. [1]

Career

After the completion of Alonga's studies, Dominique returned to Kigali-Rwanda and started working in the department of communications of Never Again Rwanda.[2] In 2014, she entered a competition for social entrepreneurs working to improve the lives of children then in August of 2015, she received a monetary award from non-profit Reach for Change that motivated her to quit her previous job and officially began the process to register her own NGO, Imagine We Rwanda.[2] Due to the lack of the literature's public access outside of the country’s main Kigali Public Library, she started her NGO with the aim of empowering the reading and creative writing culture in Rwanda.[3] Alonga beleives that one of the greatest needs that Rwanda and Africa have is the love for literature and she is devoting her time and resources to make a small contribution to these needs.[4][5] Alonga debuted with a children's book called the ABC's of Rwanda, also written short storybooks like The Burden of the Saved and The Shape of Hypocrisyand Tracing the Cracks, which has become popular because it centers on inter-generational trauma and the Rwandan genocide|1994 Genocide.[6] She has written many heartbreaking and heartwarming stories that touched many rwandans after Rwandan genocide.[7] Alonga trains young people on project development and work ethic through the History Makers Project,also focuses on book donations, training potential authors, and book publishing.[8] Alonga boosts the reading and the writing culture among Rwandans and in schools by offering them relevant materials that they can easily relate to and improve the self-esteem of African readers.[9][10]

Awards

Dominique Alonga won several prizes in youth entrepreneurship including Tigo and Reach for Change Digital Changemakers Award 2015,[11] 2018 One Hundred Most Influential Young Africans, UKAID’s iAccelerator, Celebrating Young Rwandan Achievers(CYRWA) Award and Youth connect champion 2015,World Bank Blog for Development Award 2016, and Mandela washington fellow 2016 in the U.S.[12]

Life

Dominique Alonga was born from a Rwandan mother Antoinette Nyirahuku and Christopher Alonga, a Congolese father. Alonga was born in Democratic Republic of the Congo but in 1997 her family fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo for Rwanda seeking safety. A is known for her love for writing and publishing.She spends most of her time with children for reading sessions and public debate sessions.[13]
