Dominic McGonigal[1] is an Irish-British composer, conductor, and singer whose compositions span choral, orchestral, chamber, and vocal music.

Career

McGonigal's Cathedral Symphony [2] was commissioned by the London Medical Orchestra [3] and premiered by them in July 2024. This was followed by Sunset At Sea [4] written for the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra [5].

His sacred choral works, including Set Me as a Seal [6] and Missa Et Incarnatus Est [7], combine traditional liturgical forms with modern harmonic language. His secular choral works, such as Animals [8], have a fluidity of style and lyrical word-setting. He has also written for instrumental ensembles, ranging from string quartets (In Conversation, Chatelaine) and solo instruments (After Bach, Chazal) to large-scale orchestral and symphonic works (Cathedral Symphony[9], La Fleur des Eaux[10]).

Many of his vocal compositions explore cultural dialogue and personal expression. Dialogues With Ancestors (2024)[11], written for tenor Rafael Montero [12], integrates pre-colonial South American melodies with European harmonic practices. Pachamama Regina Caeli [13]celebrates indigenous and European musical traditions in a single diptych. Collaborations with poet Euan Tait [14] have produced works including Rhythm Herd, Singing Our Fire, Where Music Touches Spirit, and Mathilde, a micro-opera tracing the life and loves of Mathilde Schoenberg.

McGonigal's Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight[15], a setting for choir and alto saxophone, appears on the Signum Classics album Palimpsest[16], performed by the Canterbury Cathedral Choir [17] and Sam Corkin [18]

Education and early life

McGonigal trained as a chorister and later read music at King's College, Cambridge, singing bass in the King's College Chapel Choir [19]. His early training exposed him to music from plainchant to the present day and influenced his later compositional style, particularly his integration of plainsong, counterpoint, and modal harmony.

Performing and conducting

In addition to composing, McGonigal is a conductor and performer. He has directed ensembles including W11 Opera, COMA Voices[20], Stoneleigh Choral Society, Opera Spezzata, EJMS Big Band, London Repertoire Orchestra and the St Giles Consort, and has served as Director of Music at the Church of St Anselm & St Cecilia, Holborn. As a performer, he plays cello, and tuba, and continues to sing professionally as a bass [21]
