Disney Genie is the name of a planning and skip-the-line service announced for Walt Disney World and Disneyland by The Walt Disney Company.

History

The service was first announced on August 25, 2019 at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. The initial announcement was vague and said the system would "make planning easier and more fun by providing guests customized itineraries," a promise that would be fulfilled with the base service in later announcements. It was also announced that the company was planning to launch the system in late 2020.[1] After the initial announcement, plans and updates from the company were sporadic, with little more than Tilak Mandadi showing the app in a press release in November of 2020[2][3] and Josh D'Amaro mentioning it in a press release on April 8, 2021.[4][5] On August 19, 2021 the Disney Parks Blog made the first large update on the project since its initial announcement, detailing the base service and paid ad-ons that would be available with the system, as well as the retirement of the FastPass|Fastpass, Fastpass+, and MaxPass|Maxpass services to make way for the new service. Disney Genie is currently set to launch in fall 2021,[6] with some signage for the new system now appearing in the parks.[7]

Response to the program on social media was overwhelmingly negative,[8] with the YouTube video featuring the press release receiving over 20,000 dislikes.[9]

Implementation

While the system has not yet started operation, press releases by Disney have stated that Disney Genie will operate through a new section of the My Disney Experience app and will be designed with tools to help plan a day in the parks, including alerts, personalized day plans, and projected wait times for attractions. In addition to Disney Genie, a paid add-on called Disney Genie+ will be available for purchase and will give the ability to continually reserve times to use the Lightning Lane, an expedited queue, on certain attractions in addition to minor perks such as PhotoPass (Disneyland) or in-app augmented reality filters (Walt Disney World). Major attractions not a part of Disney Genie+ will also have reservations available for purchase. The system will be implemented in Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disneyland, and Disney California Adventure|Disney's California Adventure.
