Diogenis Gorgonis (born April 28, 1998) is a Greek professional basketball player[1] for Iraklis of the Greek Elite League. He is 1.95 m (6'5") tall[2], and he plays at the Shooting Guard position.
Professional career
Starting from the youth teams of the Greek club PAOK, Diogenis Gorgonis joined Apollon Patras B.C. in 2014[3], another major basketball team in Greek Basket League. In the same season 2014–15 season, he played in Greece's top-tier Greek Basket League, for the first time, with the men's team of Apollon Patras B.C., in a game against Olympiakos.[4] and supported the Greek National Youth Team in U16 European Championship Men - DIVISION A.
In the summer of 2015, Gorgonis moved to Athens, Greece for Peristeri B.C., where he supported both the youth team as well as the men's team and achieved to win the Greek B Basket League|Greek B League in the 2016-2017 season, playing in 12 games [5]. In the following years, he played for Α.Ο. Ίκαρος Νέας Σμύρνης [6] and Γ.Σ. Δάφνη Δαφνίου[7], accomplishing in 2019 the promotion to the Greek Elite League with the latter.
During the challenging pandemic season, he played for Γ.Σ. Ελευθερούπολης and Α.Ο.Κ. Χανιά[8]; however, the Hellenic Basketball Federation ceased 2020-2021 Greek B League and his contract terminated suddenly.
In the 2021-2022 season of the Greek Elite League, he returned to Γ.Σ. Ελευθερούπολης and had one of the most productive years in his career. In the regular season, he played 737 minutes in 28 games with 326 points (58/130 2P & 46/108 3P), 116 rebounds 98 assists, and 23 steals [9] and led the team to the Playoffs. During the playoffs, he was a crucial player of the team, playing in 3/3 matches to support his team's attempt to advance in the Greek Basket League[10].
The next year, Gorgonis started the 2022-2023 season of Greek Elite League in Psychiko B.C. and in the half of the season he moved to Thessaloniki Greece to support the historical team of Iraklis[11].
In the 2023-2024 season will play for Doxa Lefkadas[12].
National team career
Diogenis Gorgornis has been a member of the youth national teams of Greece. With Greece's youth national teams, he played at the FIBA U16 European Championship, playing in 9 games with an average of 5.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2 assists per game[13]. He also supported in the FIBA U18 European Championship 2016/Division A [14]
