Dimitris Zissis

He is an Associate Professor at the University of the Aegean at the Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering.[1].

He was a member of the initial team of Marinetraffic.com[2], where he founded the MarineTraffic R&D Labs[3]. More recently he established the Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab (Smart MOVE)[4] at the University of the Aegean, that undertakes research into autonomous vessels, marine robotics and maritime informatics.

He has been ranked in the list of 2% top scientists in the World for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 [5][6][7].

According to [8] he is the most impactful academic in "Big data and artificial intelligence in the maritime industry", supporting the digitalisation of the overall maritime industry.

Work

His work spans a wide range of topics in the area of information systems and sensors. He is most noted for his work in developing information systems and big data techniques for sensor data processing and moving objects tracking. He is the author of more than 150 scientific publications, while he often speaks at conferences in Europe and the US[9]. Several patents filed by Google, IBM, Cisco, Atlassian, AT&T, Mærsk, Signal Ocean and others, cite his academic work[10]. Citations from patent documents to scientific publications can be understood as a proxy for measuring the knowledge flows from the field of science to industry and the only true way to quantify scientific impact on industry.
