Diana Kornbrot is a psychophysicist and Emeritus Professor of mathematical psychology at the University of Hertfordshire [1]. Her research focuses on decision making, quality evidence and the mathematical modelling of cognitive processes [2].

Career and Contribution

Kornbrot studied as an undergraduate physicist at Bristol University, followed by a Masters at University of London (Chelsea College). She completed her PhD in mathematical psychology at Colombia University, before joining the University of Hertfordshire as a Lecturer in 1974 [3].

Her research encompasses statistical inference, mathematical modelling of judgement and decision making [4], thinking, perception and magnitude estimation [5] and the psychophysics of time perception [6]. She was part of the study that discovered that people with depression had a more accurate perception of time than non-depressed people - a concept termed 'depressive realism' [7]. She has also worked with the Sensory Disabilities Research Unit (SDRU) and was involved in a number of projects related to disability and accessibility [8].

Kornbrot was has held the position of President of the International Society for Psychophysics from 2006 to 2008, and organiser of the 2006 Fechner Day conference [9]. She is a former Head of the Health and Human Science Research Institute, and Associate Editor for the British Journal of Mathematical, Statistical and Computing Psychology [10], as well as Chair for the Maths, Stats and Computing section of the British Psychological Society. Her researched has been supported by grants from a variety of sources including the NHS, the Royal Society and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) [11]. Currently, she is working on the London Accessibility Universal Dreams (LAUD) project to make the London Underground universally pushchair and wheelchair accessible [12], and holds a position as a Research Ethics Methodology expert on UK NHS Research Ethics Committee [13].
