Lt Col Dharamdatt Goel.[1], PhD is an Indian Army officer, TEDx Speaker[2], a battle casualty, Marathon Runner and a war-wounded soldier who has emerged as a source of inspiration and motivation[3] for many. He lost his lower limb below the knee in an IED blast during Operation Parakram in Oct 2002 but has since overcome adversity and has become a beacon of resilience.

Early Life

Lt Col DD Goel was born in South Mumbai and completed his schooling from a boarding school in Panchgani. He pursued his graduation from KC College, Churchgate, Mumbai. Lt Col DD Goel holds a Master's degree in Psychology from the Department of Psychology, Mumbai University, and is a PhD in Psychology.

Career

Lt Col DD Goel's military journey stands as a testament to his exceptional courage and determination. After the life-altering incident of losing a limb, Lt Col DD Goel continued his journey as an active officer, second to none, and served with honor and pride wherever he was deployed. During his career and as an instructor at the prestigious Indian Military Academy and National Defence Academy, he motivated thousands of troops and cadets who proudly serve as soldiers and officers in the Indian Armed Forces. He did not stop there. Lt. Col. DD Goel chose to engage in adventure sports as a means of personal growth and inspiration. He started with paragliding and became the first Indian to fly on an artificial leg, earning a place in the Limca Book of Records in 2020[4]. In addition to his service, he has participated in various adventure sports, including long-distance swimming and skiing. Through his endeavors, he actively motivates youth to lead healthy and positive lives. His unwavering commitment and achievements earned him the Chief of Army Staff Commendation.

As part of his mission to inspire a wider audience, Lt. Col. DD Goel authored a book titled "When People Doubted My Ability to Walk, I Decided to Fly." This book chronicles his inspirational journey and was released by the renowned Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat[5]. The royalties from the book contribute to the war wounded fund of the Indian Army. The book has resonated deeply with readers and was voluntarily translated into Marathi by Mrs. Sunetra Jog, continuing to motivate today's youth. Lt. Col. DD Goel's writings delve into various aspects of psychology, self-growth, and resilient behaviour.

Notably, Lt. Col. DD Goel ran a half marathon[6] on his artificial limb as a tribute to his late mother. Despite the challenges, he completed the run in 2.5 hours, symbolizing his dedication and reminding him of his mother's hypothetical joy in seeing him run on both legs.
