Devesh Kishore

Professor Devesh Kishore (19 November 1942 - 8 November 2022) was one of the early mass communication and journalism scholars in India. He was one of the early architects of broadcasting technology in the premiere institutes and Universities in the immediate post-independent India. [1]. [2], [3].

Education

Being trained as a specialist in Agricultural Extension Education from Kanpur Agricultural University College in 1963, a program very much needed in the just then liberated India from British rule, Devesh Kishore obtained his first ever doctoral degree in 1967 in Broadcasting Education from Gobind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (https://www.gbpuat.ac.in/). He was appointed as a Professor in the same University from 1967-1972 [4].

Contributions to Broadcasting technology

He was instrumental in establishing the Broadcasting Studios and Station in Pant Nagar Agricultural University (1970)[5]. Later, he joined as a Professor and Director of prestigious and premiere national level media institution, Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in 1972. From 1977-1992, Devesh Kishore served the National Academy of Agricultural Research and Management (NAARM, 1986), Hyderabad as a Professor and Head of Educational Technology and Communication. There also he has set up a full fledged media lab and a studio that would be helpful to rural village transmissions. [6]. After a long term stint at NAARM, he moved to Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi for establishing an Electronic Media Production Centre there with the assistance of JICA, Govt. of Japan (1993). He has trained a number of up-coming scholars hailing from different developing nations in mass communication and journalism in the US under UNDP Program and India. Lastly, he served as Dean, Institute of Management Studies, Noida (Uttara Pradesh) from 2006 to 2010 [7].

Academic Advisor

After his retirement, he had been to Makhanlal Chaturvedi University, Bhopal as a Visiting Professor. He was also appointed as a Professor Emeritus at Mangalayatan University [8], Aligarh, UP. While serving as a Visiting Professor to Makhanlal Chaturvedi University, he had lastly written the famous work-A Handbook on Communication Research ([9]in a simple and lucid style, comprehensible to both graduates as well as post graduates coming from any linguistic background in India [10].

Editorial Boards

Professor Kishore was in the first ever committee established by the UGC along with Professor M. R. Dua to develop a curriculum for the discipline of journalism and mass communication in India. That time he was the Head of Electronic Media and Broadcasting of IGNOU, New Delhi [11]. Afterwards, he has been a member on the advisory and editorial boards for many institutions and universities in India. Notable among them are: Indian Institute of Mass Communication[12], Global Media Journal [13], Delhi Media Education [14], etc.

Association with International Organizations

'He has also worked for several international organizations like World Bank, FAO, UNDP and in several projects concerning to educational communication and human resource development. He has been a member of the UGC National Research and Higher Education Panels' wrote Dr. Tasha Singh Parihar [15].As many as 12 students received Ph.D. under his supervision from various Indian Universities.

He has written a number of books [16], [17],[18],[19], [20],[21], and research articles [22], [23], [24], [25], research papers and published 12 books. A notable few that are available on line now are: A Hand Book of Communication Research, Makhanlal Chaturvedi University Publications Division,2013, ISBN 978192135533, Event Management: A booking Industry and Eventful Career, Effective Communication in the area of journalism and mass communication.

He has been Visiting Professor in USA at Syracuse University, Cornell University, Phoenix University, Arizona University and Westminster University, London. Even before his unexpected passing a way, he went to London and US during August and September 2022 to deliver a few guest lectures in different Universities. Till last minute he has been teaching and mentoring his students. Many of his students today occupy very high positions in India. Among them are Dr Rajesh Agrawal, Professor and Head, Journalism [26], Dr. Tasha Singh Parihar, Professor Journalism, (Galgotia University, School of Liberal Sciences),[27], etc.

Last Days

Professor Devesh Kishore was ill due to lung infection for a short time. Before anyone could imagine that it could turn out to be a fatal one, he breathed his last in a hospital on Nov 8, 2022.
