Detlef Wächter (born 1966)[1]is a German diplomat. He is currently serving as the German ambassador to Norway.[2] He previously served as the German ambassador to Tanzania and as the political director of the German Federal Ministry of Defense.[3]

Life

Wächter was born in Paderborn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany in 1966.[1] He received his Masters in Philosophy at University of Cambridge in 1990, and his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Bonn for his thesis Von Stresemann zu Hitler: Deutschland 1928 bis 1933 im Spiegel der Berichte des englischen Botschafters Sir Horace Rumbold. Wächter married Dr. Katja-Maria,[4] a Doctor of History.[5] The couple has 3 children.

Career

Wächter has worked in a variety of diplomatic positions since 1995, mostly as a NATO oriented advisor to defense departments.[4] He is considered knowledgeable in transatlantic relations.[6]

He was the German ambassador to Tanzania from 2017 to 2019[3], from which he became the political director of the Federal Ministry of Defense[7], making him an advisor to the ministry on foreign policy.[6] He succeeded Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr.[3] In 2021, Wächter attended a a virtual meeting with the American Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl, the French Director General Alice Guitton, and the British Director General for Security and Defense Policy Angus Lapsley.[8]

In August 2022, Wächter was transferred to the position of Head of the German Embassy in Oslo at his own request. This move was controversial as it was speculated he did so due to the behavior of the new Federal Minister of Defense, Christine Lambrecht.[6] Wächter met with the King of Norway, Harald V, to present his credentials.[9][10] He was succeeded by Jasper Wieck as political director.[7]
