Destiny Navaira (born May 18, 1993) is an American Tejano music singer. Being exposed to music at an early age, Destiny became part of her family's band, Grupo Remedio. Although born in San Antonio, Texas, a region renowned as the "Tejano capital of the world", Destiny initially found it challenging to establish herself as a singer and failed to receive the response she desired. Her debut album, La Preferida, released during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded her struggles to launch her music career successfully, despite receiving critical acclaim and the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. Convinced that relocation to Monterrey, Mexico was her best bet at success, Destiny ventured there, seeking a breakthrough in her music career.

Her second studio effort, Dime Cómo Se Siente, released in 2022, was a critical success and earned her a nomination for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album. To further honor her roots and musical heritage, Destiny chose to record an EP, Las Letras de Mi Padre (2023), dedicated to her father and grandfather. The EP features a compilation of songs penned by the two patriarchs, showcasing the family's musical repertoire.

Career

1993-2016: Early life and career beginnings

Destiny Navaira was born on May 18, 1993,[1][2] in San Antonio, Texas, to musician Raúl "Raulito" Navaira,[3] the brother of Emilio Navaira,[4] and Josette Torres.[5] Destiny joined Grupo Remedio, consisting of her father, brother-bassist player Rigo,[6][7] younger sister Lauren on percussion, and cousin Emily, Emilio's daughter, on keyboards.[8] Growing up in San Antonio, a region widely known as the "Tejano capital of the world",[9] Destiny and her siblings engaged in music instead of typical childhood games.[8] Destiny's initial collaboration with Roger Velasquez on his album, Una Noche (2016), a duet called "Te Voy a Olividar", received lackluster responses in Texas.[10] Nevertheless, Remedio won Best New Group at the 2016 Tejano Music Awards, with Destiny being awarded with Best New Female Artist.[11] After Emilio's death in May 2016, Destiny released the holiday song "La Navidad" in December, dedicating the song to those "missing a loved one this Christmas".[12]

2017-present: Career struggles and success; La Preferida and Dime Cómo Se Siente

Destiny released her debut album, La Preferida, in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic started. Although La Preferida received critical acclaim,[13] the pandemic prevented her from embarking on a tour to promote the album, adding to her struggle to launch her music career successfully.[14] Despite her decade-long tenure in the music industry, Destiny was not happy with the response her music was receiving in Texas.[10] Her attempts to promote her music in Texas failed to materialize.[14] Fueled by the COVID-19 lockdowns, she decided to relocate to Monterrey, Mexico, in November 2020, where she felt she had a better chance of promoting her album.[14]

During the pandemic in Mexico, Destiny spent her time crafting new songs that would later become her second album.[10] While in Monterrey, she garnered a significant following and appeared on El Show Musical.[15][10] Singles from La Preferida, such as "Contigo o Sin Ti", ranked on indie music charts in Monterrey and surrounding cities and received airplay on pop music radio stations in Mexico.[14] The album also helped Destiny win the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 2021.[10][11] She acknowledged the women who won the award and who paved the way for her, including Laura Canales, Selena, Elida Reyna, Shelly Lares, and Stefani Montiel and aspires to represent them in the Tejano music market.[10]

In November 2021, Destiny released "Me Da Gusta" as the lead single for her second studio effort, Dime Cómo Se Siente. The accompanying music video promptly amassed 15,000 views on YouTube. John Henry Medina of Tejano Nation lauded the track as a "catchy ranchera reminiscent of classic Tejano and Norteño sounds".[13] Destiny had the privilege of opening for Dezigual in March 2022.[3] The recording process for Dime Cómo Se Siente took place in both Monterrey and Houston, Texas,[14] where Destiny wanted to highlight the various aspects of her sound. According to the artist, the album's objective was to showcase her musical diversity.[9]

As an avid fan of Bronco, Destiny recorded "Yo Te Daba Todo", a duet with the band's guitarist and vocalist, José Adán Esparza.[10] Esparza, the son of José Guadalupe Esparza, is Destiny's role model and someone she desires to aspire to become.[10] "Yo Te Daba Todo" was released in April 2022, Tejano Nation commended the track for being "a classic break-up story, with melodies and arrangements that represent both family dynasties, Los Navaira y Los Esparza".[16] The song was nominated for Collaboration of the Year at the 2023 Premios Tejano Mundial Awards.[17] Dime Cómo Se Siente also drew influences from Selena's Amor Prohibido (1994) album.[10] The music video for "Vacia" won the Video of the Year award at the 2023 Premios Tejano Mundial Awards. Additionally, her songs "No Te Perdonare" was nominated for Vocal Performance Female, "Por Tu Amor Yo Cambiare" was nominated for Country Song of the Year, and the banda version of "Dime Como Se Siente" was nominated for Crossover Song of the Year. Destiny's album, Dime Cómo Se Siente, received a nomination for the Album of the Year award.[17] She received a nomination for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for Dime Cómo Se Siente.[16]

In response to her Latin Grammy nomination, Destiny expressed gratitude, stating that it was a great honor to have received the nomination. She believed that the nomination served as a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to her roots. According to Destiny, the nomination was evidence that anything is possible when one believes in something and works tirelessly towards it.[18] Subsequently, Destiny decided to release an EP as a tribute to her father. She felt that the time was right to record a cover album, having reached a certain level of maturity with her original music.[11] The lead single of her upcoming EP, Las Letras de Mi Padre, was a cover of Emilio's "Eclipse" (1993), written by her father and grandfather.[19]

Destiny performed at the SXSW in March 2023.[20] Destiny performed "No Te Perdonaré" for a Tejano Music Cultural event at the University of Texas at San Antonio, which was broadcast on KENS's Great Day SA.[21] To commemorate Emilio's 30th anniversary of his album, Southern Exposure, Destiny, her brother Rigo, and their cousins, Emilio IV and Diego, who comprise The Last Bandoleros, delivered a performance at the third annual Premios Tejano Mundial in San Antonio in March 2023.[22]

Personal life

Destiny graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio,[7] and is a member of Mu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma (SLG).[21] In 2021, Destiny partnered with Global Case Mexico.[10] She enlisted the services of a nutritionist and personal trainer to aid with her weight management, citing that her weight loss is an essential component of her new image.[10]
