Desmond Painter (born 30 October 1974) is an Associate Professor, and Chair of the Pyschology Department, at Stellenbosch University.[1]

Prior to lecturing at Stellenbosch University, where Painter has been employed for the past 18 years, he served as a Junior Lecturer at Rhodes University. In his current position at Stellenbosch University, where he lectures at an undergraduate and postgraduate level, Painter mostly teaches qualitative methods, philosophical and theoretical psychology, and critical social psychology.[1][2]

In addition to lecturing, Painter is an NRF rated researcher in South Africa (C1)[1][3][4] who conducts qualitative research, with a particular focus on ethnicity, nationalism, and language ideologies, gender and sexuality, as well as race and racism.[1] Painter's research interests further include topics relating to social psychology, the transformation and critique of psychology in late capitalist and postcolonial communities, and the history and establishment of critical psychology.[1]

Accordingly, Painter has authored and edited an extensive volume of scholarly literature, including having co-authored books[5][2][6], chapters in books, and journal articles. Additionally, he serves as a member on the editorial boards for several journals, including but not limited to: Pyschology in Society (PINS)[7][8][13]; Social Dynamics[9]; Journal of Social and Political Psychology [10]; and South African Journal of Psychology.[11] In his more creative endeavours, Painter has published several Afrikaans poems in the book Nuwe Stemme 5[12], as well as on LitNet.[13] Furthermore, he frequently authors opinion pieces for newspapers focused on cultural, political, and literary issues,[1][14] and engages in numerous other types of public cultural and intellectual engagement[1], such as interviews on radio, television and speaking at book launches[15] and literary festivals. One such public cultural and intellectual engagement, is Painter's founding of and involvement in Stellenbosch Centre for Critical and Creative Thought (Stellenbosch Thought). As part of Stellenbosch Thought, Painter films and posts videos on YouTube in which he and Kopano Ratele engage in discussions about topics relating to decolonial, critical, and social psychology.

In addition, in a more personal capacity, Painter engages in street photography, city photography, and urban documentaory photography and, ultimately, his photographs are shared on various public platforms, such as an Instagram account with the username @the_world_street_serendipity.
