Derron Sanders is an American entrepreneur involved in the real estate, energy, and construction sectors. He is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of SG Real Estate, SG Energy, and Sanders Group LLC (collectively, SG Companies), a privately held group of companies based in the United States.

Early Life and Education

Sanders was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended St. Martin DePorres High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1996. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University.

Career

Founding of SG Companies

In 1997, Sanders entered the real estate market by acquiring a two-family residential property in Detroit. In 2000, he formally established Sanders Group LLC, which initially focused on real estate investments.

Business Operations

Under Sanders's leadership, SG Companies expanded into multiple sectors, including real estate development, energy services, and construction. The real estate division, SG | Real Estate, specializes in the acquisition and management of multi-family properties across the United States. As of May 2025, the company manages assets in excess of $200 million.[1]

In addition to real estate, SG Companies operates SG | Energy Solutions, which provides services to utility companies and the power industry in electrical and mechanical contracting, engineering, instrumentation, and controls. In 2010, SG | Energy Solutions began working internationally, completing projects for clients including a General Electric subsidiary in Malmö, Sweden, and later expanding operations to Mexico, Pakistan, France, and the United States.[2]

Involvement with Grow Michigan II

Sanders serves as a Strategic Advisor for Grow Michigan II, LLC, an organization established in 2021 that provides mezzanine growth capital to small and mid-sized businesses in Michigan. Grow Michigan II seeks to increase access to capital for underserved entrepreneurs, with a focus on supporting minority-owned businesses.[3]

Grow Michigan II follows the model established by its predecessor, Grow Michigan, which completed 33 investments totaling approximately $61.7 million and contributed to the creation of more than 3,200 jobs in Michigan.[3]

Leadership Roles

Sanders serves on the boards of several organizations, including First Independence Bank,[4] Metro Vein Centers, and the Detroit Regional Chamber.[5]

He previously served on the boards of the Detroit Athletic Club and Alma College. In 2022, Sanders was elected to a second three-year term on the board of the Detroit Athletic Club and is expected to become the club's first Black president in 2024.[6]

Personal Life

Sanders is married to Selam Sanders. They have three children: Christian, Cameron, and Alex.

Interests

Outside of his professional activities, Sanders participates in recreational basketball and enjoys travel and literature.

Recognition

Sanders has received several awards recognizing his contributions to business and community development.[7]
