Musical Career

Derek Jones was born in Vallejo, California on May 17, 1969. He started out as a guitar player for the Generation Gap Big Band and later transferred over to bass, eventually becoming a jazz studies major at Sonoma State University. After two semesters he left university to become a full-time musician and began playing with “Los Kimbos 90s.” He continued studying the bass throughout this time until Victor Wooten and Rob Ickes prompted him to move to Nashville, Tennessee in November of 1999. In Nashville, Jones became a studio musician and began touring for the likes of Jeff Coffin, Nickel Creek, Jerry Douglas, Grease Factor, Crystal Gayle, and Peter Mayer. He also recorded bass for the Pixar short “Boundin'’” at Ocean Way Recording.[1]

After auditioning and being accepted as the bassist for the production of Kà by Cirque du Soleil, Jones moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in December of 2004 where he now resides. While in Nevada, Jones was also an adjunct faculty of jazz bass at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.[1]
