Deepak Singhal (born 1975, Kolkata, West Bengal) is an Indian business executive and leader known for his expertise in managing large-scale global businesses. As the executive director at Tolaram Group, Singhal plays a pivotal role in steering the organization's growth and success. He also serves as a member of the board of directors for Dufil Prima Foods Plc and Kellogg Tolaram Nigeria Limited.[1]

With a career spanning 26 years, Singhal has made significant contributions in areas such as consumer products, finance, and strategic partnerships. His strategic vision and leadership skills have led him to establish renowned brands and the expansion of market presence in diverse regions.[2] Singhal's commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, and fostering growth has earned him numerous accolades and recognition throughout his career.[3]

Early life and education

Singhal was born and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. His father, Ram Kumar Singhal, was a businessman, and his mother, Shakuntala Devi Singhal, was a homemaker.[5][6]

Singhal attended St. Lawrence School for his primary and secondary education. He then completed his bachelor’s in commerce from St. Xavier College in Kolkata, graduating in 1997.[7]

After graduation, Singhal achieved associate membership from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in 1998. In the subsequent year, he obtained his associate membership from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), earning the esteemed titles of Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary.[8]

Career

Singhal started his career in 1997 as a management trainee at Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL). In 1999, he moved to Nigeria, where he joined Multipro Consumer Products Limited as a finance manager, swiftly rising to Chief Operating Officer.[9]

In 2006, Singhal became the Chief Executive Officer of Dufil Prima Foods Plc, a subsidiary of the Tolaram Group, and in 2014, he assumed the role of Managing Director of the Consumer Business at Tolaram Group, Singapore, before being promoted to Executive Director in 2016.[10]

Within Tolaram Group, Singhal has played a significant role in establishing Indomie as the preferred noodle brand in Africa and overseeing the commissioning of the long-awaited Kellogg cereal factory in Africa. He has also facilitated strategic partnerships, including joint ventures with Colgate-Palmolive Company in 2019 to introduce innovative personal care and home care products to the Nigerian market and with Kimberly-Clark Nigeria in 2020 to expand the presence of renowned brands like Kotex and Huggies in Nigeria.[11]

Singhal actively promotes innovation and entrepreneurship by supporting startups and serving as a judge in renowned food technology and innovation competitions such as the Big Foodivate Challenge 2021. In 2021, he strategically allocated funding to 'Shandi,' a Singapore-based plant-based food tech company, furthering his commitment to fostering innovative solutions in the industry.[12]

Singhal's expertise and insights have garnered recognition and made him a sought-after voice in the business world. In 2022, he provided valuable suggestions to Asian companies seeking success in the Nigerian market. Singhal emphasized the importance of localizing products to cater to the specific needs of the Nigerian consumer, highlighting opportunities in the dairy and snack segments.

Over the years, Singhal has accumulated a wealth of experience in overseeing large-scale global businesses, positioning him as a member of the board for multiple companies, where he plays a crucial role in guiding their growth strategies. Notably, he is a member of the Board of Directors for Dufil Prima Foods Plc and Kellogg Tolaram Nigeria Limited.[13]

Awards and recognitions

Singhal is one of the seven foreign nationals to receive the National Honors Award, the highest civilian honor from the Government of Nigeria, presented by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022.[14] Listed among the Top CEOs of Africa, recognized by CEO Today Magazine as part of the Africa Awards in 2019.[15]

Personal life

Singhal currently resides in Singapore with his wife, Ekta Deepak Singhal, and daughter, Devina Deepak Singhal. In his free time, Singhal enjoys reading books, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.[16]
