David Thomas OBE (born 1990 in Bristol) is a British educationalist and former headteacher. He is currently CEO of Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence, a UK-based maths education charity. He is also the Conservative Party's prospective parliamentary candidate for Norwich South.

Early life

Thomas was born in Bristol in 1990. He attended Collegiate School on a scholarship and then studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Exeter College, University of Oxford. As an undergraduate he won the Kaneda Prize for the best paper and participant Carroll Round conference in international economics.[1] at Georgetown University.

Career

Thomas joined Teach First after leaving university. He taught maths at Westminster Academy before joining McKinsey & Co as a strategy consultant. In 2018 Thomas became headteacher at Jane Austen College in Norwich, part of the Inspiration Trust. He was 27 years old at the time. Under his leadership Jane Austen pupils achieved the best A-level results of any state school in the city.[2]

During the Covid-19 pandemic Thomas co-founded Oak National Academy. He was awarded an OBE for services to education in 2020[3]. He was one of a group of local leaders who turned on the Norwich Christmas lights that year[4].

Thomas became Senior Policy Advisor to Nadhim Zahawi at the Department for Education in 2021[5]. He served Michelle Donelan, James Cleverly, Kit Malthouse and Gillian Keegan in the same role.

Thomas left the DfE to become CEO at Mathematics Education and Social Mobility for Excellence (MESME), a maths education charity focused on disadvantaged pupils. MESME is funded by Alex Gerko, the founder of XTX Markets.

Politics

Thomas was selected to contest Norwich South for the Conservative Party in August 2023[6]. He has spoken out in favour of building housing and infrastructure to boost economic growth in the city[7]
