David Brian Skoczen (born January 25, 1978) is an American sports broadcaster who is currently the radio play-by-play voice of Akron Zips football and Akron Zips men's basketball.[1] He has also been the permanent play-by-play voice of the Canton Crocodiles, Visalia Oaks and West Michigan Whitecaps. [2] Over the course of his career, Skoczen has served a variety of roles at WKNR in Cleveland, Ohio and WHBC in Canton, Ohio.

Early Life

Skoczen was born in Sylvania, Ohio, grew up in Woodville, Ohio and graduated from Woodmore High School.[3]

Broadcasting Career

While attending the University of Akron, Skoczen was an active participant in student-run WZIP. He was hired by WHLO to be the first studio producer for the Akron Aeros (now the Akron RubberDucks) upon their move to Akron in 1997. Later that summer he was hired as a news reporter at WHBC and at age 20 was promoted to a full-time reporter. Skoczen filled a variety of on-air positions at WHBC and became the last play-by-play voice of the Canton Crocodiles who moved at the end of the 2011 season and became the Washington Wild Things In 2002, Skoczen was named the voice of the Visalia Oaks, who are now called the Visalia Rawhide. He was named play-by-play voice of the West Michigan Whitecaps in 2005, a position he held for four years. During his time in Visalia, Skoczen also called high school football games for KTIP and KJUG as well as basketball games for Porterville College and was a fill-in on Fresno State baseball broadcasts. Beginning in 2012, Skoczen filled a variety of on-air positions at WKNR, most notably hosting ESPN Cleveland Tonight and calling games at the Mid-American Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments.[4]

Personal Life

Skoczen married the former Lisa Couto in 2003 and the couple have two children together.
