David Magee is an author, columnist and TEDx presenter.[1] His books include How Toyota Became #1 (Penguin Random House), an American Library Association Top 10 Business Book of the Year; The Education of Mr. Mayfield, named a Best Book of the South (2009); The John Deere Way (Wiley); and Playing to Win: Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys (Random House).

Magee is also a national recovery advocate and author of the 2021 book Dear William: A Father’s Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love and Loss (Matt Holt Books), featured on CBS News Sunday Morning.[2] Kirkus Reviews described Dear William as “[e]ssential, poignant, and insightful reading for anyone aiming to understand familial patterns of addiction;”[3] and Reckon named it one of the 25 best books to come out of the South in 2021[4] Magee’s book Things Have Changed: What Every Parent (and Educator) Should Know About the Student Mental Health, Substance Misuse Crisis (Matt Holt Books) will be released in August 2023.

A national columnist and editor for media outlets including Newsweek,[5] Magee formerly was the editor of his hometown newspaper The Oxford Eagle, where he wrote a column about his late son William that took first place in the Commentary Column category in the Mississippi Press Association’s 2017 Better Newspaper Contest.[6]

In 2023, Magee became host of The Mayo Lab Podcast, which is focused on discussions about the mental health and substance misuse challenges facing American young people.[7] He is the director of operations at the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing, named for Magee’s late son, at the University of Mississippi; founder of the William Magee Center for AOD and Wellness Education, also at the university; and director of operations at The Mayo Lab, which aims to drive a new conversation about mental health and substance misuse among parents, educators and students.
